The Australian International Marine Export Group recently took a group of Australian companies on a four-day trade mission to China. This opportunity gave Australian companies the chance to network with targeted Chinese businesses, consolidate their knowledge on the China-Australia Free Trade Agreement (CHAFTA) and ensure Chinese companies understand how to utilise this agreement. All of this was made possible with support from the Australian Trade and Investment Commission (Austrade).
Key companies to participate were Aquamare, Bellingham Marine, Coursemaster Autopilots, David Lambourne Yacht Rigging and Consultancy, Hydrive Engineering, Marine Airflow International, Pyrotek Noise Control, Stern First, Seaway Logistics, Silver Yachts and Vetus Maxwell. These Australian companies along with distinguished Chinese guests invited from Austrade China and the China Boating Association attended a CHAFTA Seminar on Thursday 27th April followed by a networking lunch where each Australian company was given the opportunity to speak to the audience regarding their capabilities. As a result of the individual introductions the Chinese companies present were able to target the Australian company of interest to them ensuring some very positive discussions and outcomes.
Andy Stephens CEO of Vetus–Maxwell described the event as extremely valuable with positive business leads being generated as result of this trade mission.

Utilising the platform of the China International Boat Show in Shanghai held 25th to 28th April made this trade mission more valuable to the Australian companies who were looking to further enhance their understanding and knowledge of CHAFTA. AIMEX utilised space within the show environment as an education forum to promote the benefits of CHAFTA to those Chinese companies exhibiting or visiting the show and looking to engage with Australian businesses. This forum also enabled collection of valuable data and lists of those Chinese companies who now understand the benefits of CHAFTA and the capability of the Australian marine sector.
AIMEX will consolidate the database of Chinese companies and make this information available to members. AIMEX has developed considerable information in regards to the benefits of CHAFTA for the Australian marine industry and sees projects such as this invaluable in assisting Australian companies to engage directly within the market and drive outcomes for Australian exporters
In-depth knowledge of CHAFTA is crucial for Australian companies hoping to create further business opportunities and successfully foster greater engagement within the Chinese market; ultimately resulting in an increase of exports to China for Australian companies.
