Justin Parer, Managing Director of BSE Maritime Solutions, was last week awarded Commercial Marine Industry Champion for 2017 at the annual Australian Marine Industry Awards.

Justin has been involved in the Australian commercial marine industry for nearly 20 years and is a tireless supporter of the Australian maritime industry through his advocacy across state and federal governments to enhance Australia’s sovereign commercial maritime capability.

Last year Justin established the #cairnsforthewin consortium together with global heavyweights Damen Shipyards and Teekay Shipping in an effort to reinvigorate the Cairns Marine Industry by tendering for the building of 21 Pacific Patrol boats. Despite coming a close second to Austal for the construction of the patrol boats, Justin’s efforts in raising the profile of Cairns as a strong ship build and repair region led to securing $24m of funding for marine industry infrastructure in the region.

MaryAnne Edwards, CEO of AIMEX, said “Justin galvanised the Cairns ship repair industry during the patrol boat bid and his efforts to establish the Cairns Maritime Maintenance Hub will leave a lasting legacy to the Cairns region and the commercial maritime industry. This award is fitting recognition for his selfless efforts, and is testimony to the capabilities of our Australian Commercial Marine Group’s membership base”.

The Australian Commercial Marine Group is dedicated to supporting and developing the commercial marine & defence maritime industry through the promotion of Australia’s marine operations, shipbuilding and ship repair capabilities.

Despite achieving so much Justin’s plans for the future are equally ambitious, with a focus on increasing Australia’s competitiveness within the international commercial maritime ship repair sector.  Justin sees the challenge facing the commercial marine & defence maritime sector is to rethink the way ship repair is done and is currently pursuing emerging technologies to realise this vision.
