Ship builder Austal has won a $63 million contract to build two Cape class patrol boats for use by the ADF.

Ship builder Austal has won a $63 million contract to build two Cape class patrol boats for use by the Australian Defence Force.

The two boats will be delivered in mid-2017 and are to chartered to the Department of Defence for a minimum term of three years.

National Australia Bank awarded the contract to build the boats to Austal, which has the option of buying back the ships at an agreed price if Defence returns them after three years.

Austal will also provide in-service support for the vessels.

The company has so far built eight Cape class patrol vessels, which are currently being used by the Australian Border Force.
